End-of-life Decisions

Coping With Mesothelioma: Dealing with Illness and Grief - End-of-life Decisions As uncomfortable as it may initially appear many believe it far better to talk about and make definitve end-of-life decisions as early as possible - if they are never needed then that is fine but leaving it too late can cause many problems.

Most people have clear prefernces about end-of-life issues and for all those involved it is best they are spelt out.

The task may be put off as such issues may be difficult to be talked about or there is enough time to do it later.

Leaving this task undone leaves the danger that it can sometimes become 'too late' and decsions are made without the patient.

Health Care Proxy
Health Care Proxy (HCP) forms allow patients to name someone (a proxy) who they want to make medical decisions when they are unable to. In some states, the HCP is preferred over a living will as the patient does not have to say exactly which decisions need to be made as the proxy knows "what I want". Two witnesses needed, notarization optional.

Living Will
A living will is similar to an HCP but it provides more detail about medical care, nutrition, and other medical issues. Not legal in all states, lawyer usually required and notarization in some states.

Do Not Resuscitate
Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) notices advise medical staff that you do not want extreme measures to be taken to save your life (for example, no resuscitation if you stop breathing). Some states have approved DNR forms available, signed by your doctor.
