Brachytherapy
Brachytherapy delivers short range radioactive substances to (or very near to) a mesothelioma affected area during surgery - "Intraoperative Radiation Therapy" (IORT).
Mesothelioma affected areas that cannot be removed during surgery have a custom-made pliable absorbent mesh with radioactive seeds stitched to the area. The radioactive iodine seeds in the implant deliver their radiation over several months.
Although inserting the mesh should not add to surgery time where it did do there were additional complications.
The decision to use the mesh is usually made during surgery - the mesh having been created in advance.
