Rare Forms of Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma of the pericardium is a rare cardiac cancer. It is usually spotted at a late stage and subsequently the prognosis is extremely poor. The prognosis for mesothelioma of the ovaries or scrotum are also quite poor.
Another rare form of mesothelioma is cystic mesothelioma of the peritoneum - a layer of mesothelial cells covering many organs in the abdomen - which is usually found in young women. . Its prognosis is benign with the majority having surgical resection. There have been reports of many cases of cyst recurrence so hormonal therapy is being used to try and control the size of cysts and alleciate some of the symptoms. Treatment includes extensive electron microscopy and immunohistochemical studies.
The etiology of the rare cases of mesothelioma in children is still unclear and may not be asbestos-related.
